Which is better, Juice or Concentrate?

There are constant arguments about the truths and myths surrounding Concentrate Juices and 100% fruit Juices.

Questions like:

  •         Why is juice from concentrates cheaper?
  •         Is juice from concentrate bad?
  •         What does concentrate mean for juice?
  •         Not from concentrates juices
  •         Is juice from concentrate bad for you?

Firstly, we shall define both of them properly.

Fruit concentrates are fruit with the water removed. So, it retains the sugar and calories but loses the fibre, volume and vitamin c. This is tantamount to losing a huge part of its nutrients.

So, when it is used to make juices, it no longer serves the healthiness that fruit juices should serve, ordinarily. This is why we can say, it is bad for you, and you should not buy concentrated juices.

100% fruit juices on the other hand, as the name implies are made from 100% “liquid fruit”, i.e., there are no added colourings, preservatives or sugar. This is the better kind of juice, as it is definitely healthier.

Drinking 100% fruit juice can play an important role in building a healthy diet. Just like fresh, frozen, and canned fruit, 100% juice counts towards your daily fruit intake and contributes to a healthy lifestyle. It’s considered one of the top beverages by registered dietitians, who recommend 100% fruit juice in addition to water, milk, and vegetable juice for children and adults. Always buy this kind, do not buy concentrated juices.

However, while 100% fruit juice is a healthy choice, it should be consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. The calories in any food or drink count, so whether you choose whole fruit or fruit juice, portion control is important.

You should also not buy concentrated juices, they do not exactly fill in the gap for 5-a-day vitamins need, unlike 100% fruit juice. It is true that fruit juices contain the natural sugar (primarily fructose) that is in fruit. Fruit juices that are 100% juice also contain comparable amounts of the nutrients as the foods from which they were made, with the exception of fibre. Additionally, they contain other healthful substances like antioxidants and phytonutrients that are also present in whole fruits. In the case of juice, the key is to purchase ‘100% juice’.

100% fruit juice has many of the same nutrients found in whole fruit. These juices contain essential vitamins and minerals, along with other beneficial plant nutrients, like polyphenols. Be sure to check the nutrition label before buying any juice to be sure the product is made using real fruits, and not concentrates.
